914 will hold a VW type engine but it's a mid engine transaxle and way expensive.

The 2.0 from our 914 wnet into my sisters Type 3 fast back and a Mazda 13B rotary went in to the 914.

berge builds 5 speeds. But thats $$$. Different gearing? How fast or how much torque do u need? are u running 33-35inch tires? or trying to go 100mph? or both?

i think the tires are about 28/29 inches tall. more low end torque would be nice and topping out at about 80 mph will do just fine.
then again, i might be just imagining that this is an avenue i want to take...
when you say $$$ is that upwards of $1,000

thanks to all your help:)

berg 5 speeds are 3500 bucks give or take last time i looked, nd that's just for the trans. There's a buncha work that has to be done to the car to accept a 5 spd on top of that. You can use a stock 4 speed and do what you're wanting to, yu just need to do a little research and make some calls to trans builders to set your gearing up.

a tailshift (early) 914 gearbox will be easier to convert than the later sideshift box, mounts must be fabricated and the ring gear flipped. The 901 out of a 911 or 912 is pretty close to being the same unit, but since it is a rear instead of mid engined car, the R&P turn the right way.
