i bought a 1970 baja bug a few months ago and i'm finally starting to work on it. the motor sounded funny and puffed during start up. felt like it had enough power driving it down the road, even loaded with 4 guys in it...

tested for spark, adjusted the valves, adjusted the carb, still nothing

thought it might be the #3 cylinder.

took off the heads (factory) and to my demise, a hole that went from the cylinder chamber to one of the head studs:(, and when disassembling, all of the head studs were finger tight. so i have to get new heads, no biggie.

so, what i want to know is: should i go with the 1600 heads for more reliability= less power or 1641 heads for more power=less reliability?

or can i get 1600 heads and change something else in the head for more power?

most of my driving is on the road, some packed sand/dirt roads. no dunes, mud or drag racing...

any help would be greatly appreciated:)

Heads are bored for cylinder diameter. Stock heads will fit both 1600 and 1641 cylinders because they're machined from the same outside diameter thickness cylinder. It's the inside diameter that changes. If you want to wake your heads up, you're not going to be changing the bore size, you're going to be doing things like porting and polishing, playing with the valve diameters, changing the rocker geometry, adjusting the capacity of each individual cylinder (IE changing from a 60cc head to a 65cc head as an example). You can spend a LOT of money on head work but it's one of the single most important things you can do to really wake up a motor.

"1700 cc heads" isn't really accurate. If you go to a head with a larger bore, you need to go to a piston and cylinder that are also that bore (IE 90.5mm sets that would bump you to a 1776 cc motor), or you're going to be hosed and the motor will run like someone shot it, if at all. As far as reliability goes, it really depends on how hard your run the car and how good your head builder was/is. If they know what they're doing and do a good job, worked heads can be as reliable as stock, of not more. If they're fly-by-night or just importing junk from china, your mileage may vary. There are several good companies out there that sell "upfitted" heads for a variety of applications from mild to wild, and you can usually find a set that suits your budget.

Hope that helps Smile

Setting up rocker geometry isn't a power adder, it's just what you have to do when building an engine.
You should really talk to a local engine builder if you can. You should set the engine up as a package, but if you're just looking to get new heads and not pistons/cylinders, I'd say just get stock valved heads and have a reputable shop do some light port work on them, maybe raise the compression a "little" and put some carbs on it.
If you want to go bigger you can go anywhere from 1641 to 1915cc by getting a piston/cylinder set, after gettting past the 1700cc mark you can start justifying gettting larger valved heads (40x35 probably as big as you'd wanna go)....but then you really should pull it apart and get a larger cam that fits your driveing style..........and the list goes on....

Here is a list of parts for a motor I am building right now. This is a fairly inexpensive build for a 1915cc thatnks to the Chirco kit

www.chircoestore.com/c...ts_id=2621

We went with the engle 110 cam on this motor.
