So, I'm installing a new top end on my car today. Had some help lined up, but he had some work-related issues pop up today and doesn't appear to be available. I've got a cooled garage, the heads are off, the right side cylinders and one piston are off, and I'd like some supervision for re-assembly, as I've never done this before. I'm right behind the Home Depot at Power/McKellips. Anyone have some time early this afternoon to drop by and lend a hand for a bit?? Pleeeeeeze??? I'd really like to get this thing together today.

Thanks,
Tony

Well, I've got one side together- hopefully it's all good. I preoiled the cylinders, ran a light bead of red RTV around the cylinder bases, and just did the very light initial torque of the head. There's no gaskets at the cylinder base or between the cylinder and head, right? (my kit came with none, and there didn't seem to be any installed on disassembly).

keep your fingers crossed... I probably won't be able to work on the other side until later tonight.

OH, and I pulled the pistons out and spaced out the ring gaps. Oil controls both up (but spread out some) and a 120* gap on the compression rings...

Sounds good so far. And yes there are no gaskets.

PS

Remember that oil that you lined the cylinders with? Don't freak when it smokes a little when you first fire it up. It could take a bit for the rings to seat also.

Some day we need to do an engine build clinic. I have no clue about the VW engines too.

Well, things took a turn for the worse. Got to the second side, and when I pulled the #4 cylinder, I found that one circlip had failed, and the wrist pin had both wallowed out the piston AND dug a nice oval groove in the cylinder. Plus, I think some idiot bent the rod on that cylinder (that would be me) trying to get the wrist pin out.

Can you say niiiiiiiiiice???

Time to pull the motor. Pisser since the only time I've driven the car is home from the previous owner's house...

The upside is that at least I'll know what I've got for a motor. So far, it's got CB 044 heads. We'll see what else is inside.

If your careful you can change the rod without splitting the case. I have a spare rod.

Yeah, Scott made it over right after I pulled the #4 cylinder and found the damage. He's recommending that I pull the motor and have a look inside. I'm thinking I wouldn't mind, so at least I'll know where I'm at with the motor. I don't really want to have to worry every time I drive it if there was something else going on in there, and the next mash of the pedal is going to cause catastrophic failure. Also, I'd like to know what else is IN this motor (cam, etc.)...

Im all for this. I could have gotten an engine for dirt cheap, but I didn't want to have to put it back together...I would love to know more about engine builds.
