74 is a pain. You have to disassemble most of the column staring with the plastic top & bottom covers. You might as well pull the steering wheel off first to make the job easier. There is a pot metal casting under all that with the ignition key and tumbler in it. Its been a few years since I have done one, but I believe there is a set screw that holds it in.

big d forget to mention that first the steering wheel, then the turn signal and wiper switch, then pull those out and you will see the steering bearing. to the right of that you will see two screws that holds the ignition switch housing. pull that off and you will need to make sure that the steering will doesn't lock up. pull the unit out and you will see the little set screw at the top. pull that out and set it some place that you won't lose it. Then remove the key part of the switch match it up with the new one. then replace, and re assemble the colum. trust me it won't be the last time that you have to replace it

jam a screw driver into it and turn it un locking the the steering wheel . because the pin that locks the wheel will not alow you to pull the houseing out. I. e. alowing you to get to the small screw to let lose the key and tumbler.

while you are in there take a look at the electrical portion of the switch. once you get the key part into place turn the key and if the switch is worn you will see the plastics separating . now would be an awsome time to do it.also to get a closer look at things . the electrical portion is held in place like the key part. with a little bitty screw.

Or you could buy the steering column that I have with the key and just swap them out. All I want it the $100 I paid for it and shipping.

No problem, I brought it for my baja and then found out that it not the right year. It's out of a 74 I think but the guy said it would work in a 75. So, if anyone else is in need of a steering column with key let me know.

there is a snap ring in the center of the house that holds the colum bearing. remove that and loosen the nut on the bottom of the housing and the two bolts holding the colum up to the body. Be carefull not to break the bearing and it's housing.
