Well, I started ripping this dried-out foam rubber crap that some idiots thought was a good idea to glue all over the interior of my baja, and found some rust in the rear compartment behind and under the back seat (Gee- let's glue a huge SPONGE all over the inside of this guy's car!). That corrugated metal area behind the rear seat (and under it), on the passenger side of the car has a long thin area that has rotted through. It looks like it'd be easy to replace that section, as it's probably only about 3" wide. Would I be better off cutting it out and using some sheet metal riveted over the hole, or do I need to go to the trouble of using the same corrugated steel and welding it in place? The car is caged from front to rear, so I don't think there's any structural issues, just cosmetic...

Personally I would weld in the right peice. You can get away with riveting, but you need to put some seam sealer (avialable at most auto body supply stores) on the piece before you rivet it down. It will seal the seam, and also keep the rivets from vibrating loose.

Well, to start with, I'm going to cut out the infected portion. It's probably only about 2" wide, but it's rusted through both in the upper level (behind seat), and straight down below on the lower level under the back seat. I thought about cutting a matching piece out of a '66 body a nice guy named Daryll on here gave me, but the '65 and '66's both have a metal track of some sort attached across the car (where the corrugated metal bends and drops down to the lower level under the rear seat), and the '59 doesn't have that. I may still cut some of the corrugated metal out to use as my patch though...

Anyway, my understanding of rusted steel is you need to remove it to keep it from spreading, even in dry ol' AZ. I'd prefer to do a little more than just band-aid'ing over it and pretending it isn't there, y'know? Don't know if I'll go all the way with welding and everything, but we'll see...

Thanks for the input Daryll.
