Hi All,

Just starting my search/research for a baja, whether to build, buy, etc.

I have just starting reading through this forum, and already see many folks saying stay away from the superbeetle. What is the problem? I am afraid one of the baja's I am looking at its a super. Do only superbeetles have the larger, more round tail lights?

Thanks for your patience, and I will keep reading.

Supers have a Bad choice for a front end, Struts.

Easy to tell. look under the front and if you see 2 tubes with a bar hang out of them going to the wheel with a normal shock, your good to go.

If you do not have the 2 tubes but have some sort of "A"/"H" shaped part with a huge shock and spring combo then it's a super. Also look for curved front windows as most supers have them. All normal Bugs have flat front windows and a few supers have flat front windows too.

A SUPER BEETLE IS OK IF YOU PLAN ON DOING A FULL ROLL CAGE CAR. BUT THIS IS EXPENSIVE. WHAT I MEAN BY THIS IS CHOPPING OF THE FRONT BULKHEAD AND REPLACING IT. THIS WOULD BE OK BECASE YOU WOULD HAVE THE LARGER D/P ENGINE AND THE IRS SUSPENSION. REPLACE THE P.O.S. STRUTS WITH A K/P FRONT END. "WOW MUSIC TO MY EARS" GOOD LUCK HOPE TO SEE A PROJECT SOON. HEATH

From what I've read, it's enough of a pain in the butt that it's best just to stay away from the Supers. There's plenty of straight bugs out there man- go for it!!

And welcome to the site!

Mine is a pan of a super. I Did a Linkpin frame head conversion. The front of the super was toast (Thanks to a E-350 van) so i took the body off the pan. did a little sawsall action to it. and welded on the new frame head. Wish i took some pics when i was doin it. Its NOT HARD AT ALL! With a little faith, tape measure, and a welder... Got my linkpin beam from bugzylla and the pan head from Pacific Customs, But i think Chirco has them also and those guys are WAY more helpfull.
Supers also have a different ratio tranny so youll need to change out the Ring and pinion. That sucks
