Post Post subject: Battery light, and no power. Part two

Hi
Driving home tonight, my baja just stopped. Turn the key and nothing. Radio/Cd player going crazy; turn the hazards on and the cd stops, also the side lights start to flash??
Check the battery and it's down to about 8volts. If you read part one, you'll know that I have had the little red battery light on; but dim and reading if 17 volts at the alternator terminal amd 12 at the battery.
Just to go a bit more. I have two cables coming from the alternator; the thinest from the little spade connector goes into the wiring loom, which I presume goes to the good old little red light. The other which is thicker, goes to the starter motor; to the selenoid part. From this, two cables go to the battery; a thick black one; which again I resume brings the power to the starter. the other re-charges the battery?
What I am thinking is; could it be the volatge regulator in the alternator? My reason; because the good old little red light??????????

SEEMS TO ME THAT YOUR RUNNING OFF THE BATTERY, THE BATTERY STARTS YOUR CAR THEN THE ALT TAKES OVER AFTERSTATING,,RUNS YOU POWER THINGS IN YOUR CAR ,,,LIGHTS STERIO, ECT,,,THE VOLTAGE REGULATOR REGULATES HOW MUCH JUICE FROM THE ALT GOES TO RECHARGE THE BATTERY,,, I THINK YOUR ALT WENT SOUTH,,, IF YOUR LIGHTS WENT DIM AND THINGS CHARGE OR JUMP YOUR BATTERY,,, CHECK YOUR ALT CONNECTION, IF YOUR BATTERY GOES DEADAGAIN ,,,,,,,,BAD ALT

I had the same problem some weeks ago.
It iss probably the regulator.

This device prevents the power to run back from the battery to the alternator when the engine is running low, which would result in all sorts of problems.

Solution is easy. Find the regulator, its an aluminium box placed either on top of the alternator or on the drivers side under the rear seat.
Disconnect (remember wiring or make a photo) and take it out. Open it. There is one screw in the center, (sometimes overpainted but it is there). Spray some wd40 in it. Fiddle a bit with the relays. Let it dry (!).
Reinstall the regulator again, DONE!

Don't know if you guys use this stuff, in Holland there is no workshop without it:
WD40

Here's a pic of mine under the rear seat (hope it's not to big):

Thanks guys for all the support. I checked it all and the cable from the alternator to the starter motor was the culprit. i changed this and some more plus put a new belt on.
