Hey guys, I figured I would post some of my progress.

A little history first. I had a 67' complete, never wrecked, all original. Picked it up nice and cheap(almost free), my family owns a garage in town and a customer had a bug that had been sitting for 5 years, they wanted to "unload" it, so I said No Problem. Well after a few hours of work, new fuel lines, flushed the tank, new plugs - wow she fired up and ran great. Well, I really wanted a baja, but didn't want to chop up that nice bug. So I traded it to a fellow AZBaja member. Anyway I traded for a 67 Baja, Class 5/1600 Caged front to rear w/ new Swing Axle geared lower(welded 3rd and 4th as well).

Well after driving it for a while, I found that it didn't have the 1600SP he said it did. Bummer - feeling like I got shafted on the deal. Oh well, I kept on driving it and really started to run it hard. (With the little 1200 in it - lol) One afternoon I was overdoing it a bit and almost endo'ed it. (See avatar, next picture of the sequence is me landing on the front bumper at 30MPH) Well I ended up bending the tube chassis on the right front. Turns out, who ever built the cage never tied it into the front tunnel, just bolted it to the pan. They also did not weld all the way around most of the cage intersections. Needless to say I bent the passenger side up almost 2".

I decided to cut the cage out from the B-Pillar forward, convert to linkpin, push the front out 5" and extend the tunnel forward to tie the cage into. Here are some progress pics:

This is the inside of the car after I cut away most of the front Cage, then I found out the main hoop was repaired and only built with .083 Wall tubing - so I cut it out too.

Here is the rear part of the baja, before cutting the B-Pillar section out:

Here is my tunnel addition, they cut it off flush at the firewall. I re-built and re-enforced the tunnel. The new front tube chassis will tie into this.

Here is the lovely 1200, and my welding equipment (Old School silver Beauty 220V and a Miller 110)

The bender I built, works decent, but this design causes too much flex

Here is the new front cage, tacked in

New Rear Cage Tacked up:

Picked up a used Turnkey 1835 for her

Here she is in my garage waiting to sit on all four again:

I will post more as I get further along.

Blaine

Figured I might as well post it, havent seen a project Baja from T-Town in a while. I just finished mocking up the lower front of the chassis. Need to pick up some more tubing tomorrow.

Hoping to have it sitting on 4-wheels by the end of this weekend

Yuma! You better take a sand car while your out there and play for a bit!

I will post some more pictures soon - I am trying to figure out what color I want to paint the cage. I am liking the Rustoleum Hammered stuff. Maybe a silver or gray.

Made more progress today. I am pretty sure that most the bending is done. Now I just need to start getting some of the triangulation done. I am hoping to have it on all fours this weekend.

Also, anyone know the best way to ream my linkpin spindles to fit the ford Tierod ends? Would it just be esier to run heims?

Anyhow - here are som pictures of my progress:

Front piece sitting in place:

Front beam mounted up and supports welded in:

Front Full shot of the supports:

Front tunnel and how I tied it in - more supports from the upper tubes still to come:

Inside view:

In this picture, I am debating on the best way to strengthen the lower support. Should I gusset? Or should I run a piece of 1.5" tubing at a 45* angle from the lower support to the door support? Both? I am not sure.

I have decided to paint it Hammered black outside and inside, Hammered gray for the cage, and spray in liner for the floor. That will be last of course.

More to come from me

Where did you get the dies for your bender? I have a similar bender that takes the same style dies, and I want to get a few more.

I ordered the dies from ProTools. They used to have a kit that "do it yourselfers" could build. Weld the die together, but they dont offer that anymore. The die there is a 5.5" CLR for 1.5" tubing - $220 shipped to my door. They have about a 12 day lead time though.

I have my point of contact there if you want his number.

Looks great, Blaine.

By the way, what part of Tucson do you live in? I grew up at Golf Links and Harrison...went to Santa Rita High. Probably be more midtown / Uof A area when I move back.

Looking forward to seeing it in person!

Jeff

I graduated from the UofA last year and just bought a house in August. I am located at GolfLinks and Pantano. Its not midtown, but it has grown quite a bit.

Love to meet up with ya when you get into town

Keith - Let me know on that 091. I need to unload this 1200 I have in order to make room for the 091.

Update on the car. I should be dropping her on the ground tomorrow. I just have a few more supports to weld in and the front is done.

Here is a shot of the front almost done, with spindles and rack mounted up:

Sky view of the front:

Side Profile of the beam and rack. Need to sand blast the beam and rack to get it looking a bit better - WOW

Cant wait to get her rollin'

Still need to find a T3 rear drum, anyone in AZ??

Well -

Finished up the majority of the front bracing. Found my T3 rear drum and dropped her on all fours. I have a lot of minor details, odds and ends to finish. I am waiting for my seats to finish getting re-done. Once they get back to me, I can mount up the new steering and shaft.

By the way, (AzBaja, I found where my car came from, found an old thread about it. The guy I picked it up from had no idea what was in it. It definetly didnt have a 1600 in it - lol http://www.azbaja.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=959.html

Here are some pics:

Front Bracing:

On all fours, looks much better. The pushed beam makes it look awesome.(notice the GREEN drum, took a while to locate one):

What it used to look like:

Also -

I am interested in finding out who owned this before the kid I picked it up from. The kid I got it from didn't know too much about VW's. From the title, who ever owned it before My PO(Before December 06), had the baja for over 7 years - most likely racing it.

Anyone know the previous owner?
