hey guys, its been a while since i was on here, and iv just recently become interseted in bajas now that it is summer and school is coming to an end. Anyway... i'v had my eyes on a couple of beetles around town that have been sitinf froa few years and one recently got moved away and the owner said that they actualy paid someone to move it from there yard. I was quit mad seeing as i could of had a free beetle to convert to a baja. So i am now asking for help and methods of aproching the ownners of these parked beetles to buy them from theme.

i read "how to keep your air cooled volkwagen alive" and he had hints on what to look for when buying a beetle that is running, like checking the motor over and stuff but seeing as these ones have sat for at least 3-5 years i dont think they will start. I was told that when trying to start an engin to put a bit of oil down each cylinder to lube them up but i dont think that would work on a flat engin.

I expect that the cost of the beetle will have to include new brake lines, and brake work and probably an engin rebuild. I have a huge garage and a shop with all the tools to work on engines. Are there any other costs that will set me back with reapirs i will have to do to get one of these running?

thank you in advance

not yet but found it in stock at a store in town, well at least they had it a year back. I did read through it once and went over a few things again.

Baja Bugs and Buggies is the book you need.
I recomend trying to find one that already runs, it's alot easier.
Don't be to worried if it does not run good, it probably did not have someone that knows what they're doing work on it.
STAY AWAY FROM SUPERBEETLES! The front ends are not good for Bajas.
Don't go by just the flat winshield. The early supers had flat ones.
Yes, go through the brakes. If it does not run, just turn the motor with a wrench and I would not pour oil in the cylinders. Mine sat for 2 years and all it took to get it to run was fresh gas, a new carb, and a new starter.
Iv'e got about 2 grand in mine, not counting purchase price, and I'm not finished but I can drive it. I also got alot of free wrench time and parts from friends and family.
Make you a wish list out of a magazine. Include everything you want.
Now, start narrowing it down to the priorities and what you can afford.
Keep purchasing more , when you have the funds, and before you know it you have a pretty cool Baja. thesamba.com is a good scource for parts too.
I recomend installing the parts as you get them to keep the fever.
All you have to do now is find one to rescue. GOOD LUCK!!

The Motor I have set outside for a couple years.(As in sitting out of a vehicle on the ground outside of the shop).
Only quality parts for me. Razz
Squirted some marvel mystery oill down the plug holes, turned it by hand untill it rotated freely.
Only probs besides a few oil leaks, is when I was fighting the carb.

ok, i,v narowed the year of the beetle down to being between 1956 to 1960. I based this assumtion on the fact that the beetle has tubless tires (1956 and newer) and still has dark plastic sunvisors and pull-type handels (both discontinued in 1960) however i do not know how to tell if it is a super beetle or not. The one im looking at has a flat windshield.
