Just picked up a '63 Baja...and need some advice. I have messed with Ford and GM Trucks for years, so I'm new to the VW Crowd.

There are a couple of problem areas...

Steering is really tough...like something is binding. The guy that I bought it from gave me a new steering damper with it. Could this really be the problem? I'm a big guy and I still have to put all my weight into steering the car.

The steering also wanders bad...like unsafe bad, road walks alot as well as a bunch of play. (kingpin front end)

Where do I start? Are these common problems? I just don't want to start in the wrong place.

Thanks for all the info.

Check the steering box lash. I think its set up like a ford or gm box, box centered. Sounds like to me he bajafun is on the money though. You could disconnect one thing at a time and pinpoint it to the problem. I think to rebuild a king pin front end, you need to ream the new bushings after driving them in.

Ya, my shaft was too tight!! Shocked

When I put my new streering box on I put the shaft too low, all I did was loosen the coupler at the grear box and move it up about a quarter of an inch.

Also check the link pins. Thes hold the king pins to the trailing arms, have a quarter turn of adjustment and are held in with a pinch bolt on the trailing arm. If loose you will have play side to side like worn ball joint feeling.

Threw a new steering box and rag joint on it and everythings working fine. Greased the hell out of everything on the car, rides nice, and doesn't road walk. The old box made grinding noises when I turned the input shaft with some pliers. Thanks for the info...much appreciated!
