Well, I picked up a windshield today for my baja. Is there a trick to installing it? I hear it sucks, so any tips that'll make it easier would be great. I heard something about a string, but I've got no idea what that could be...

Thanks.

Yes it sucks! I did this just a couple months ago. I used 3/16" nylon rope pushed into the grove on the outside of lip of the gasket (outside after you have it installed on the windsheild) A spray bottle with soapy water, and a butter knife bent at a 90 deg angl about 1" from the tip. When you put the rope around the gasket make sure to leave a a couple feet hanging out on both ends of the rope have them overlap in the middle at the bottom of the windsheild. I sprayed down the windsheild frame and the gasket with the soap water. While everthing is soaked have a freind push the windsheild into the openening He needs to keep pressure on the windseild but it doesnt take alot . while he is doing this you get in the car with your soapy water and your knife and start pullng the string you will see the lip of the gasket to start to go over the windsheild frame lip (make sure to keep everything lubed with the soapy water) pull slow and evenly if the gasket starts to pull back over the lip of the frame stop and use the knife to try and pull the gasket back over the lip after you get a couple feet of gasket over the lip or get around a corner have your friend tap the windsheild with his fist (while still pushing on it) this will help seat the gasket. I found the lower corners to b the toughest to get around with the rope, this is where you will probably be usng the knive to help he gasket around the turn so the rope doesnt rip the gasket. Just keep working the gasket and windsheild in and after the gasket is all the way around the lip go help you friend tap he windsheild all over the palce to make sure it seats.
Good luck

I saw on a website that there is a tool made for installing the glass in the bugs...AFTER I installed the glass in my "Bad Bug"!!! It consists of a rope with a wood handle on one end.

BTW, per Bugzyla's suggestions, I used WD-40 for lube. It worked great!

I was quoted a price of 55.00 for the glass and install at a local auto glass place. That's worth it to me so I don't have to do it! You might check with one that is not a chain store, you might get lucky. Stick to a Mom and Pop.

I have a friend of mine that does window installs. I watched him do it and he didn't use any soap or water. He used some type of suction handles and some nylon rope and like a screwdriver pic for the rubber seal. He popped it in within a few minutes, with alittle pressure and then pulled out the nylon cord still using pressure and then used the pic to make sure the rubber sealed correctly. He told me not to apply too much pressure to the window cause it will break. If I was you, I'd pay the money and have a professional do it. Hope this helps you out.
