Hey guys hows it going. I'm in the process of buying a baja bug right now and have a few questions. I'm going to use the rest of the summer and the winter to prep the car for the California Rally Circuit. I'm looking at a 69 baja bug right now as a starter car. He's asking 1200 for it because the main pulley fell off while driving and he doesn't want to fix it. If i can get it for 1000 that will give me about 3-4 grand to put into it to get it ready for the rally next year. I figure at least 1500 for a cage, seats and some good harnesses. That gives me 1500-2500 for suspension and other upgrades. What would you guys suggest for that kinda money to get a car somewhat race ready? I'll have a mill/lathe/welder, etc later on this year so most of the fabricating for anything I can do in house. I was thinking of 3x3's in the rear with a bus tranny and 930 cv's which should give me over 12 inches of travel in the rear if i get the limiting straps and modify the spring perches and aftermarket shocks. Is that possible w/ the stock torsion bars or will they not support that much travel? Up front I was gonna convert to a link pin with a 6" warrior beam, lifted spindles, weld in some adjusters and probably go with 10" shock towers. Again will the torsion springs support that much or am I looking at coilovers already? I really would like to not go with coilovers yet if possible.

I'll also need to fix the engine. I've read on here that a sand sealed pulley is only like 40 bucks and he said it ran fine until that happened. Any detrimental effects from that falling off? The class I'm trying to enter has a 2.4 liter max size so if needed I can save up abit and buy a 1900 or 2100 kit, but don't really think I'll need that yet.

All these ideas i got from just trolling these forums and other forums so anymore insight you guys would be great. If you guys can let me know what you think about the plans it would be great. Sorry for the length.

Wow!! I too was trying to rally a VW. Mine was going to be a Ghia. The biggest obstacles I had was, the distance to the races and the entry fees (the only real rally in AZ was $500+). I wasn't going to put much more than a roll cage and some good tires on the car. As I understand it there are a lot of high speed turns and the only jumps are really fly-a-ways. The suspension ideas you have are great for all out desert racing, but I think you would be over doing it for rally. I would set up the suspension with all new STOCK components, urethane bushings, a good set of tires and rims plus spares and I would put a really good roll cage in. After you get some races under your belt then go for the upgrades that you think best suit your driving style.

Remember: Most of the other cars are slightly modified sedans with sway bars, struts and low profile tires.

As for the pulley "falling off", if you are set on buying this car go over it with a fine toothed comb!!! Things do NOT just fall off!!!! I think that I would look into other cars.

With out a picture of the damage we really can't tell you how bad it is.

Well put Mykul! For the short time I tried rallying, the cars were all about stock height, just very re-inforced, and super quick steering. Nothing tall or with a lot of travel.

Agent 4573 the mods you are talking about would be great for tearing up the Mohave trail out by Barstow, or Happy Valley (Gorman)

I'll be getting pictures tomorrow from him to see what kinda shape everything is in. I'm not dead set on the car, but all the decent bugs I find on thesamba or recycler or even on here are at least a 2-3 hour drive awawy, and I have no car right now so its a little hard to find people to drive me. I'm not in a big rush though so if the car doesn't look solid I'll pass it up. Theres actually one for sale on here right now around pheonix that looks amazing, but I can't drive 6 hours for it.

I wouldn't mind all out desert racing either, but I hear rally is a bit cheaper to get into. Does anyone have a link to the Class 2/5 regulations for desert racing because I can't seem to find it on the net.

I appreciate the inputs, maybe I'll go with a bit of a different setup for rallying, but to be honest, theres only like 4 or 5 races in the CRC a year and most of the time I'll probably will be out at gorman or up at Red Rock Canyon just for weekends flings.

So I don't wanna be annoying, but experienced opinions would really help me out cuz I'm definately new to this. This one is for sale on the samba and is located closer to me than most. Your opinions would be greatly appreciated, suggestions on what else I should ask him would also be great.

www.thesamba.com/vw/cl...?id=444672

I asked for more info and heres what the reply was...

Kinda expensive and not a lot of detail. If you like it try to get it for $2500 or less.

The only way I know how to get regs is to buy them from SCORE ($25). The races I am running have very minimal rules, but they are nowhere near the size of the SCORE races.

Well, you certainly have your hands full. I don't know exactly why you want to get into rally sport. But, I myself would pick another vehilce to rally. Maybe an 80's ish BMW would be real good for that.
However, if you must rally a vw then lets go for it. Like the other replies, still with the stockish suspension. Maybe better shocks like some KYB's, urethane bushings, and good sway bars are the key to turn quicker. As far as the cage goes its up to you if you want a stiffer car or not. Doesn't hurt, but weight is one thing to consider. Suspension, you don't need a jumper just a good suspension. 3x3 trailing arms is a bit much. Make sure what you do have with stock is good though and the new bushings will help there. Tranny, is a bit much as well. You might need a higher geared one than low. Bottom end is not the answer. Motor, just don't build a bottom end one like a 2332. Stick with more top and mid power. Good luck, be safe and have fun. Hope this helps out.

The car in the ad would be a good start for a desert play/racer/driver. You could drive it (since you don't have another) and modify it as you go. The intake in the picture does not match the description single/dual. Ball joint can handle some abuse and the IRS is better. Like Mykul said, cheaper would be nice, but not too bad for a running driving car.

i didn't even notice the dual carbs in the pic. Its close enough I'm prolly gonna go up this weekend and take a look at it. I had about 2500 in mind for it also, so if he's willing to come down on the price a bit it might work.

He doesnt give much details for a $3000 Baja with worn out street tires...Bus box? Suspension? Brakes? Rust? Wiring? Make sure you ask questions and dont buy the first one you look at! Maybe Im not up to speed on value or maybe just cheap but I would want a hell of a lot more baja than that for even $2000.
No bag on the seller...to the right person with $3000 burning a hole in their pocket it may be the deal for them.

Think what you could do to this one with $2500...

yeah i saw that one before. Unfortunately him not having the title makes it nearly impossible for me to register it as a street legal car, so I had to write it off as unusable. I'm sure a decent one will pop up.

I've seen a few bugs go through on E-bay from the Cars for Causes in Santa Paula. Not TOO far from Eddie's Air Patch. You might also look around Lancaster or Rosamond. I seem to recall seeing a few bugs around there.
Last time I had my baja running was at Gorman. Lots of fun trails. Cool
