New to the VW world and am havin a great time gettin my 66 road worthy. (I may have to hawk the hou$e pretty soon).
I have a 66 bug (s/a trans) and was wondering if the shift rod is designed to have an "angle" bent in the center, or do I need to replace a bent shift rod?? Thanks again as always!

I've heard that some do have bends. Does it work? If so why would you replace it?

I drove this car once since I bought it, and not sure if it was working or not. I know the bushing was gone, and I couldn't get 1st gear. I thought it was the trans so I bought a rebuilt one and installed it, and guess what? Same problem. I've heard of angled shift rods before, but just wanted to be sure before I attemp to re-install.

I shift rod DOES have a slight bund to it. With the hole for the shifter pointing up, it will have a slight bend towards the bottom.

got it in with a new bushing, and got gears! I think I may need to adjust the stop plate, cuz even though I have gears, they don't glide in. The rod did have a slight bend as you descibed. Is this normal on a newly re-built trans? (possibly?)

Thanks guys!

I've got a rebuilt Rancho Swinger in my '66, and I had problems finding gears properly. Turned out that the t-handle shifter I had was a POS, so I went back the the original one and a short throw kit. Problem solved. I still have a little problem downshifting from third to second, but it's something I will be able to dial out by adjusting the shifter slightly. I"m just lazy Smile

I have the Scat T-Handle shifter inmy car and the shifter rocks!!! it's over $75 but it's worth it. I had the empi thing in my car before and it sucks... a $75 shifter is good shifting, a $20 shifter well it's a $20 shifter and you will hate it.

'Zactly. I had the old Hurst in my '67. That was the coolest shifter ever! I'm going to try and find another one used, but if I can't I'll probably save my pennies for one of the CSP ones.
