This summer I have found a job that will fund my baja undertaking. I have been planning to purchase a VW bug to turn into a baja but I am uncertain as to which year to purchase. Is there any drawbacks to any of the many years of production? My grandfather told me of ball joints on the wheels that are not ideal. But is there any one year that is ideal for this project?

With Respect.

The favored front end is called a linkpin front end (original equipment on models prior to ball-joint front end, which was introduced in 67 or 68?). Favored rear suspension is the IRS, which (of course) didn't begin production until 67 or 68. Basically, NO production models had the better front end AND the better rear end, so you've got to change one end or the other if you want linkpin AND IRS.

Makes the decision easier, right? =)

Then what about the inverse of that? What is the easiest year to convert?

all depends on preferences.

do you want IRS? are ya comfortable with swing axle?

then theres king pin front end or ball joint front end...choice is up to you!

67 has both a ball joint front and a swingaxle rear.

As does a '66. Depending on how hard you are going to drive, most people would recommend getting one with IRS. "69 and newer. You can do a lot of off road with the ball joint front end and convert it if/when it breaks. Driving a lifted swingaxle off road is a little more precarious.

Hope that helps. Cool

Is it necessary to change the pan head to convert from a balljoint to king pin front? I'd like to go long travel eventually. I've also heard the king pin front will take more abuse. Anybody?

THE HARD CORE OFF ROAD (BAJA) GUYS USE A KING PIN FRONT WITH AN IRS REAR. YOU HAVE TO CONVERT FROM ONE TO THE OTHER DEPENDING ON THE YEAR OF THE PAN.

with that said, go find a decent specimen of an aircooled classic. take some pics. post em on this site.

then go and make a baja and have fun!!!

Pick up the one that has the most modifications done already. Since people who sell them do not realize all the money they spent they will not get back.
