Howdy,
The aluminum gas tank is in the package tray area and tha battery is on the tunnel just in front of the access hole for the shifter joint.
Do most people mount the tank in the trunk just in front of the instruments?
Where would a better place for the battery be? In the package area once I move the gas tank?
I have a small seat in the rear that really needs to be reworked. I don't like the idea of the kids having a battery (its inside a plastic case, but still...) rubbing on their shins and a gas tank behind their heads.
If I free up the package tray area I coulds mount a 20MM ammo can for tools, etc there.
Ideas anybody?

I'll tell ya how I'm going to do mine and why. I'm going to mount my tank in the front out side of the car (I hate gas fumes) plus the extra weight up front will be nice. My battery is staying under the seat (out of the way). I'm keeping my rear seat also adn am either keeping the stock one, or will do aftermarket with a flip mount for access. I don't like the idea of a fuel tank or battery sitting in the sun under glass. Just keep in mind, the more debris you have inside, the more chance of injusy when or if an accident should occur. Go on the web and check out pics, you'll get some good ideas

Some pics would be great if you can get em, but I would consider putting them back in the original spots. If you are not going to get too radical off road they should be fine. I would not want my kids to be that close to em either. I also would not want the gas tank inside the car anyway! Do you have an electric fuel pump? If so, I hear it's better to mount it near the tank so that it pushes gas rather than pulling it. Keep that in mind if you move the tank.
If you have a one piece front end however, the tank will probably have to stay where it is. You still should have room to put the battery back under the seat.

check this out, I like the setup.
www.azbaja.com/copperm...os=44.html
and bubba's right, if you run and elec. pump, you need to mount it close to the tank, they're made to push, not pull.

The previous owner took all the glass except the windshield out and it was a sun roof model so there wasn't any fumes to speak of. It's a alum tank, gravity fed to the motor, which is directly below it. There is some roll cage running up from the trunk through the dash tying in to the roll cage so there may not be enough room to put the tank in front. I'll have to measure it. Maybe get some pics too. The rear seat isn't the stock one, it's like atwin size fiberglass bucket. If the kids didn't have skinny behinds I don't think they could both fit in there at the same time. (I couldn't with another adult Embarassed ) But it looks like it was added as an afterthought, so I'll maybe cut it out and re-do it. Somebody mentioned a quick-release for the seat? Do you know where to get them or is it a DIY job? If I could get the front pax seat to tilt the kids wouldn't have to climb in the back window. Embarassed

Has anyone ever relocated the battery to the front in the trunk area? If so what does it take to do it besides a long battery cable?

A battery box and a place to mount it. A master disconnect switch would be wise as well.

Got the seat out. Should I move the battery from the tunnel to the floor?
It will stick out a few inches in front of the seat but I'm going to have it
in a plastic battery box. I need to re-angle the seat more square so
people's heads don't stick out the back window.
Also moving fuel tank to the trunk but theres no gas line in the tunnel anymore. Has anybody ran a new
one through the tunnel, or do you just run it along side?
Thanks

In the pics it looks like there is enough room to relocate the bat. back to the stock position.

Hey, Oldbug 59
You may have to up wire gauge as well as length to put the bat. up front.
What do you think Bajafun?

JUst keep in mind that you have resistance(or voltage drop) on long runs. I'd use 2/0 cable if running from the front, better to have enough than not. Put in a disconnect switch and you'll be ok.

Planenutz, definately move that batt. back to a low and covered position, stock would be nice. I'm keeping my stock rear seat for now. Going to hinge the bottom for access to battery and heater core (going watercooled) Also going to notch the seat out to clear the roll cage. Safety is paramount. Split the seat belt into two anchors. Two 150 lb people equal 300 lbs of force on that one bolt! no bueno! As far as the fuel line goes, if you can find a length long enuff to go front to rear with no splices, stay in the tunnel. If not, go along out side in a protected area.

I didn't even think about that seat anchor. Thanks. Embarassed I have 5-points in the front but I would not feel comfortable getting crazy with the kids in the back.
When I worked at NAPA we sold miles of that 2/0 cable to farmers and truck drivers. It should be the ticket for putting the batt in the front. I'm thinking of going with a side-terminal batt under the seat, just to give a little more clearance between it and the seat.
When running the line through the tunnel, do you use copper or steel line, and do you attatch it to the inside of the tunnel anywhere with clamps? (if so, HOW? lol)

personally i dont like the idea of running cables inside that tube, especially live hot wires/. the idea of your fuel line, brake line, and not to forget a moving steel rod (shifter) all bouncing and beating together does not sound good. Mine runs along side of the tube/ soon to be covered with another pressure resistant tube. stock bugs probably run along the body by the driver for the same reason?.. not sure, just my two cents Smile
