All you auto body painting Gods out there. I've a question (or two or three) for ya.

I'm pretty good on mechanical stuff but totally suck when it comes to body work. I can weld etc. but I don't know my a$$ from a whole in the ground when it comes to painting/prepping.
First question: do I have to take the body completely down to metal to prime/paint?
Second question: if using a wire wheel on the body to clean up rust etc., does that make it too smooth for primer/paint to stick well?
Third question: gonna have to replace the passenger heater channel, any suggestions on the best way? The body is separated from the pan with the body at about 36 inches in the air.

1st question...depends on existing paint. If cracked, peeling or 27 maaco paint jobs, yes. If still has factory paint, no.

2nd...A wire wheel will create a lot of heat and posibly warp the panel. Best method is media blast; easy, not too much heat, leaves it clean. Downside is the stuff gets everywhere.

3rd...no idea..sorry.

The media blast work good, just don't pull a hunter and use to much air and get to close. Did it on my 50 ford and warped both doors! No! No! No! No!!!!

use jasco paint/ adhesive remover. found in paints at home depot.

brush on, let dry, lighty with a plastic blade, scrape off.

if its on you, it burns like hell! even through jeans!!!!

this will cook the paint off and leave the steel fresh and shiny.

I have found that some 60 Grit sandpaper and a sander works pretty well too. Then of course you go finer . I 'm only going through one coat of non -factory paint The body on my 59 is pretty straight so I can't say much about the metal shaping , but I'll give that a shot too on any dents or dings I find.
(The media blasting would be much easier)

its water soluble. once it bubbles the paint, hit it with a high pressure hose nozzle . but whatch out for the over spray. aim for the dirt, not the skirt!

Mr. Green
Thanks for all th help. Unfortunately the weather changed (AGAIN) here in VA so I gotta wait until it comes back. I did rip out the old passenger heat channel. Boy what fun that was. Gotta get that ordered too so I can shoot all at the same time.

I used the paint stripper on the Charger. I let it sit for about 15-20 minutes. If it dried, the paint stuck back on somewhat. Yes, it WILL take skin off too if you let it sit on you. I used a putty knife (metal- not plastic) and just rolled up the old pant. I wouldn't reccomend using a hose to peel the paint & stripper off; could splash on you. Rolling Eyes
