I bought my bug over a month ago. It had a bad knock in #3 so we replaced the motor with a new 1776...and did a complete rewire. I have driven it around town quite a bit. Even though I have a nice GMC Jimmy, I enjoy driving my bug as my daily driver.

Well, I finally got to take it to the dune today. I have a friend who is very familiar with where to go so he and his son took me and my son out. He was in his truck and me in my bug. It was a blast. I am so glad I got one of these. I used to own a two-seat 250cc buggy but hated it. This is exactly what we needed.

However, our trip was cut a little short when I attempted to jump the bug in the sand. We hit a steep but short dune at more than 25mph. I thought it would be fine but wasn't. Yes, it was a blast clearing 25 feet of sand before impact. However, there was an impact. Turns out that VW didn't intend for the stock front end of a bug to take that sort of abuse. I will attach a photo. The one of the bug being stuck is when I tried to drive with my front tires going two completely different directions.

We took out the fuel tank and bent it back and towed it home.

I will continue to seek all of you help regarding my bug but an very thankful for the help that all of you have given thus far!! Thank you very much!!

Reminded me of a scene from a movie-

Rusty Griswold: "Wow dad, you musta jumped like 50 feet!"
Clark Griswold: "Son, it's nothing to be proud of..."
Clark Griswold, reflecting, nodding his head: "50 feet..."

Looks like fun! Glad you didn't permanently injure yourself or your car...
I'm diggin' the camo paint, Gene. Two more headlights would be cool- a narrow/wide-eyed baja!

Now that looks like fun!! Never seen a tie rod look like a bow before Very Happy . This is where the chromoly tie rods come in play. They have some spring to them and flex back after some abuse, to a certain extent of course. I'm guessing the soft sand had alot to do with it. You might consider some reinforcement to your beam and frame head if you plan on having wings alot. Here's a link to some parts you might consider.

Chirco is a good place to go for parts. check em' out.

Make a trip to the local metal place, take your tie rod (the bent center section without the ends) and find some thick wall tubing that will slip over it. Weld the tubing on leaving enough room for the clamps that hold the tie rods on and there you have a cure for our problem. If the tie rod is bent too bad, just cut the ends off and slide them in the tubing and weld them in.

Oh, and it looks like fun!!

Well I guess it depends on if you want Steel, or Heavy Metal music. Mr. Green The eugene springfield area had a boomin heavy metal scene there when I lived there in the 80s.

"some reinforcement to your beam and frame head"

Never heard of that.

Thank you for the pointers. I was planning on finding something stronger today. I like the tube idea.

BTW..."Nick" is the real name. Gene Frenkle is from one of my favorite skits on SNL...hence the "more cowbell".

Yes, Eugene is very liberal, but I live in Springfield. I am surprised none of them Bluegenians haven't tried to stop us from "destroying" nature with our devilish baja and four-wheeled behavior on the dunes. There must be ONE "native species" that we have displaced.

just found a piece of 3/4" ridgid conduit (electrical rated grade hvy steel pipe) that should slip right over the tie rod and be tacked on if needed. the tie rod is about 5/8" - 3/4" diameter, and the pipe is 3/4" ID.

sorry that was 3/4" black steel gas pipe...found at home depot.

What do people typically do with the steering dampener? Take it off? Leave it?

If you are street driving it, leave the dampner. I have one on mine and it helps keep the wobble down.
