dismantle the swingaxle rear suspension on my pan without killing myself? Aren't the springplates under tension? All that's left on the pan are the springplates and I guess the torsion bars are inside the housing, right? I'm converting to IRS- the pivot brackets are already in place.

If you would like to borrow a torsion bar tool, let me know. It bolts to the body mount and has a hook to hold the spring plate.

Or if the car is supported with the spring plate free, a large prybar will get it off the stop. Just have to make sure nothing can be hit by the plate as it comes down with the force of a scorn woman!

Use the tool, it's good. I normally use ratchet straps, not a good idea, but I still have all of my fingers!!! (for now)

It's not as scary as people make it out to be. Just be careful. There is a great write up in Baja Bugs and Buggies.

So, using the tool, you're basically going to pry it up, slide it over the hook, and let it gently travel down past the hook, relieving the tension in the torsion bar, right? Seems logical anyway. When the tension is off, you can just take it apart, right?
