According to the Jeff Hibbard book, it looks like someone beat me to the job! Below is a picture. Unless I do some cutting, I do not see how I can angle the spring plate any lower. ON my stock 68, the spring plate lays slightly higher than the baja one. Did I maybe not understand the book? Or did someone save me some trouble for free Wink Please let me know. That other pic is just of my hood back onto the bug. Looks good, but i'm not thrilled with the stripes. I only intended to paint the raised part of the hood but it looks like i did a weak attempt at racing stripes.

Hmm. Maybe not. Mine was located in the same place (resting on the stop) at rest. Of course my engine was out but again, mine started there too. I installed adjustable spring plates any way so I can play with the ride height and give more stiffness to take the bumps.
Remember the location will change when you load up with people and gear.
If you want more height, I believe (help us out here folks) you may be looking at bigger tires (not the best idea) or longer arms. Also you can install a body lift. A body lift won't give you more suspension travel but will give the bigger tires more room to move.

Ya those are stock bald-ass tires. NO money to replac em yet. My engine is out as well. Is it a procedure to be done with the engine in? ON the stocky the engine is in and the spring plate sits up a little bit.

I assume the setup is with the engine in. I watched where my plates were when I dropped them off the stop then offset them a tooth or two when I installed the adjustable plates. Gives me a better starting point.
I also installed adjusters to the front end as well. I offset those by a degree or two as well. I don't know what/how this will effect the ride yet because I'm a ways off from "road worthy", but I feel confident of my settings because I remember how saggy a bug suspension can be.
Unless some "real racers" out there disagree with me off course. No! No! No! No!!!! No! No! No! No!!!! No! No! No! No!!!! Then I'll be starting over, but I hope I'm close enough. I plan to use mine for "just fun" not real racing.

The rear will sit higher w/o an engine, hence the springplate on the rest. According to Hibbards book, you re-index them on an IRS to just cover the lower bolt hole. When the engine is in and the driver, it will lower the car and get off the rest, therefor you will have some droop for the dips and a better ride. Smile

Hope that helps.

The engine does not have to be in to index it covering the bolt hole, but will change where it is at rest.

I may be wrong on this but here goes.
The plates will be touching the stops when the car is jacked up whether the engine is in or not, so.
Yank the engine and tranny.
Make sure the car is level.
Measure from the ground/floor up to the bottom tip of the plate.
Remove the plate.
I think there will be enough room to start the arm back on the splines without being above the stop and with the bottom tip lower than the original measurement( I think 2 inches is the max) then use a floor jack to rotate it upwards until you can take a hammer and drive the arm back onto the splines all the way.
That's the plan for mine this spring. I would suggest plenty of help to ensure everybody has all fingers when the project is done.
Put the engine and tranny back in and STAND ON IT!

Bubba you are correct. The car will be jacked up at that point. DUH! Embarassed

JUST MAKE SURE you use a good chain to attach the jack to the frame, as the book says. This will compress the suspension instead of jacking the car up further.
Better yet, spend the $26 or so for the tool. I took mine apart using the jack/chain method, what a pain in the arse. I bought the tool which made assembly much easier. Very Happy
I also used the lower bolt hole for a refference, which the book says is a good starting point for a baja.
Use a bit of wheel bearing greese on the axle splines and the spring plate splines to help slide on a little easier. I still had to use a good block of wood and a mini-sledge to persuade it to slide on. No! No! No! No!!!!

i would leave the transmission in the car when indexing torsions. you will be changing the drive axle and CV angle, you dont want more angle than the CV will handle. when you think you have the torsions where you want them put 2 bolts in cach CV just to check the angle.

There is no need to remove the engine and trans to re-index the torsions. Just added additional work, unless you needed them out for something else.

why a roof scoop? you live in WASHINGTON state!!!!

even down here in the desert we run "scoopless" on ours.

I never intended to get one but the price was right and included and external oil cool,er which I was planing on getting anyway. Thought it was valves, but it definately needs new heads. Thing ran like poo after a while. It was once a daily driver. Im not the VW expert, and neither is my dad, but he knows more and thats what he said she needs.
