Get something on an IRS pan , '69 on (NO SUPERS!). Cut the head off and weld on a Link pin pan head. Go to town from there. Tires and motor/trans combinations are going to be up to you, but I'd humbly suggest a nice peppy 1915 dual carb motor and a nice beefed-up T1 trans or a bus trans.

Reliability is all about durability. If you take the time to build it as robustly as possible and build it to match the way you'll be driving it, a big motor will last a very long time. 1915 isn't all that big anymore when guys are running 2.3l turbo motors on the street daily. You might look into a stroker motor too. Bigger crank, smaller cylinders so you can have thicker cylinder walls for more heat dissipitaiton The torque from a stroker motor would also be beneficial for churning them 31's.

You can run a smaller displacement engine all day long if that's what you're comfy with, but it may not feel as peppy with big tires. In the end, it's completely up to you, but if you do a little research up front you're going to be far happier with the end result.

With a smaller engine (1600) your going to have it rev'ed out higher and for longer periods (Trying to get more power) accualy puting more stress on it. With a larger engine you get more reliable power because your not stressing it as much... a 1915 is as good as it gets non stroked. But the preferance is totaly up to you and how much $$$ you have.
if your not sooo interested in goin super fast (70mph @ 5500RPM) just get a gearbox thats geared low and youll never have to worry about turning those 31's

I have a 1600, stock swing axle and 235's on the rear. It's a dog. it's not fun to play in, gets stuck easily.

For 3-4 Grand, you can by some pretty dang nice bajas already done, with everything you would want. For instance, I picked up a 68' Baja, has a Mofoco 1915 in it, brand new tires all around (31" in rear). Needs a few things, but when its done, I will probly ask $2500 for the car, its in GREAT shape. Perfect for daily driver and offroading.

Oh trust me I know the enjoyment of building my own, but I also know the frustrations AND the budget creep. Building one is a heck of a lot of fun, but it really helps to get one that has been started and work from there.

They used to back in the ol' days. They would take the front fenders flip them around and bolt them right up to the back, do a little trimming and whalla! but as for the front, not that I know of... someone correct me if I'm wrong
